Update your directory at least once per day. Don't get behind. The key to a successful web directory is fresh, valid, and relevant content. Dead links or links to sites while active, no longer exist, do not a good directory make.

My biggest pet peeve are the sites that go dark, only to be revived by some generic parked page at Godaddy.
